DispatchLive reports that Saturday marked 26 days since a group of more than 130 Eastern Cape pensioners, some in their 90s, commenced protest action outside Parliament in Cape Town.
The pensioners are former employees of the Ciskei Transport Corporation which shut down in 1990. Some include former employees of SA Transport Services, who had their services terminated in 1988 after a strike. The protesters say they've been waiting since that time for their pension and Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits. One of the protestors said on Friday that their stay in Cape Town had been “traumatic” and had affected the health and wellbeing of some members of the group. The issue has been referred to the Labour Department, but it said there was little it could do because legislation at the time meant many of the pensioners did not qualify for UIF benefits.
