sapsThe Star reports that a Johannesburg police station commander, dubbed the “bunking brigadier” after allegedly taking leave of about 156 days in just two years, has been promoted.  

A Gauteng police spokesman said Brigadier Govindsamy Mariemuthoo had been moved from Jeppe to the Joburg East cluster of seven police stations, which includes Jeppe.  Mariemuthoo’s lawyer, Jose Nascimento, indicated on Monday that the move had been on the cards since last year and had nothing to do with his absenteeism.  “Brigadier Mariemuthoo’s promotion is deserved and in fact long overdue,” he stated.  Nascimento also pointed out that his client never took any unpaid leave or unauthorised leave and that most of his leave was on medical grounds that were substantiated.
