BDLive reports that unemployment figures released by Statistics SA on Monday paint a bleak picture of the extent of job losses in the country’s metros.
The report shows that six of the country’s eight metros recorded job losses between the last quarter of 2015 and the first quarter of 2016. The largest job losses were observed in Ethekwini in KwaZulu-Natal, where 144,000 jobs were lost, and in Ekurhuleni in Gauteng, where 111,000 people lost their jobs. The City of Cape Town and the Nelson Mandela Bay municipalities increased employment by 4,000 and 3,000 jobs, respectively. The Northern Cape, North West, Mpumalanga and Limpopo do not have metros.
