miner thumb medium90 104SABC News reports that liquidators at Cons Murch mine outside Phalaborwa in Limpopo say they are still in a process of getting a new buyer for the troubled gold mining company.

The company was liquidated last month with R240 million debt owed to the creditors and workers.  Over 800 mine workers have gone for a month without getting their salaries.  One of the liquidators, Chris Monyela, said they were doing background checks on some of the prospective buyers.  "Initially, when we started we had four buyers, but we are still inviting interested individuals who are interested in purchasing the mine to furnish us with their letters of intent as well as proof of funding.  We are mindful of the fact that the mine employs more than 800 employees and what we are trying to do is to try and get someone who can come in and buy the mine so that jobs are saved," Monyela indicated.

One of the affected mine workers, Rex Mathebule, said they were unable to take care of their families.  "I am really struggling, this situation is affecting me as a breadwinner and the worst part of it is that we were never informed beforehand that the mine will close.  Without an income it’s impossible to put food on the table and I cannot afford to go looking for a new job somewhere else."
