healthcareTimesLIVE reports that the national Department of Health announced on Wednesday that its electronic vaccine self-registration portal was up and running, with more than 34,000 healthcare workers having already registered for the Covid-19 vaccine.

Health minister Zweli Mkhize pointed out that this marked the beginning of a complete vaccination health information system ranging from registration to certification.  He said the system could capture all relevant metrics of South Africans to be vaccinated and would also ensure those who were vaccinated were contactable and alerted to optimise adherence to the regimen and complete the certification process.  Mkhize explained further:  “The system will then verify one is a health worker by checking against the data provided by the personal and salary system, private systems, facility data, employer data (for example, cleaning and security contractors) and other data from organisations and bodies that employ or regulate healthcare workers.  Therefore, while it is possible to register on the site if one is not a health-care worker, the system will automatically prioritise verified health workers for phase one.”  A healthcare worker who has not self-registered will not be denied the vaccination.
