gavel thumb100 The Witness reports that the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court sentenced a municipal employee to five years’ imprisonment or a R40,000 fine after he was found guilty of submitting false overtime claims over two years.  

Msunduzi (Pietermarirzburg) municipal employee Reeaz Paruk was sentenced for fraud, forgery and uttering, which happened at his work place.  He was also compelled by the court to pay back the overtime claimed, amounting to R385,102.94, which will be deducted from the payout of his pension.  Paruk, a foreman at the municipality’s electricity department, was arrested by the Hawks in May after a Msunduzi internal audit unit investigation implicated him in the overtime fraud.
