numFin24 reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has announced that its members at Eskom will go on a strike from 8 August 2016.

General Secretary David Sipunzi said on Friday that, following a mediation process through the CCMA, an agreement on demands presented to Eskom had not been achieved.  He added:  “Eskom's offer of 7% is an insult to hardworking Eskom workers, while keeping the lights burning.  Eskom workers are unable to feed their families."  The union also said that Eskom failed to address the apartheid wage gap of 50% between the minimum and maximum salary scale and that white employees were still paid more than black people.  Demands include a one year wage agreement, with a 12% increase for maximum wage earners and a 13% increase for minimum wage earners.  Eskom spokesman Khulu Phasiwe urged staff not to take part in the strike because the law prevented essential service workers from downing tools.
