EWN reports that the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has challenged government to better train community healthcare workers and create permanent jobs for them.
Saying they were an important partner in the fight against HIV and Aids, TAC activists gathered and marched at the Durban International Convention Centre where thousands of delegates have gathered to discuss ways of tackling the pandemic. The group’s Violet Kaseke said: “In South Africa, we have 72,000 community healthcare workers, and I’m going to say this is not enough, but still the 72,000 that we have are people that have been poorly trained. They are exploited and pathetically paid.” She added that community healthcare workers sacrificed their lives and deserved better from government.
