Bloomberg reports that with wage talks at South Africa’s major platinum producers set to start, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is demanding a 20% increase in pay from Anglo American Platinum (Amplats).  

The NUM is the second-biggest union at Amplats after the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu).  The NUM is seeking a two-year deal and wants underground workers to earn a minimum of R12,000 a month and surface employees R11,000 a month.  The increase as requested includes salary-related allowances.  NUM general secretary David Sipunzi said on 3 June that platinum producers could afford a pay increase and, while the NUM might not get its opening demand, it would not take anything less than 10%.
