eNCA reports that the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) says it fully supports the strike over pay by South African firefighters in Canada.
Last week, some 300 South African firefighters, sent by government-funded body Working on Fire (WoF) to help fight a wildfire in Canada, refused to report for duty after raising concerns about their daily pay rate. In a move to help resolve the dispute, government has dispatched a mediator from WoF as part of an intervention effort. Samwu said in a statement on Sunday: “The South African firefighters are currently on a work stoppage following discoveries of salary disparities between them and their Canadian counterparts. These workers are unfairly and unjustly treated by their employers who knowingly took these workers to Canada only to pay them $4 an hour while the minimum wage is $11.20 in that province.”
