samwu thumb medium80 78SABC News reports that the continuing unprotected strike by SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) members in Phalaborwa, Limpopo, is affecting the provision of essential services.

Technical services that mainly deal with water and sanitation and also electricity have been brought to a halt.  Over 300 workers are demanding the adjustment of their salaries and benchmarking as approved by the municipal council.  They are also calling for the resignation of the mayor, chief whip and speaker.  Samwu leader in the area, Nkateko Mavuso, said they would continue with their protest action until their demands were met.  The municipality has obtained a court interdict preventing workers from entering the municipal offices.  Netwerk24 reports that part of the municipal buildings were set alight on Wednesday night, ostensibly by some of the strikers.
