The New Age reports that Gauteng Premier David Makhura on Wednesday promised that five million jobs would be created in Gauteng in the next 14 years from a massive R1.3 trillion capital investment in social and economic infrastructure.
Speaking at the province’s economic indaba in Sandton, Makhura said this was needed to fight the growing challenge of youth unemployed in the country’s richest province. However he could not give more details on how he plans to achieve the huge economic task, except that a R1.3 trillion capital injection would be made in social and economic infrastructure such as water, transport and human settlements, manufacturing and building. Wits University economist Dr Nicolas Pons-Vignon said it was crucial that Gauteng prioritised sectors that were likely to create growth. He said the government should not support companies without demanding developmental support in return, such as skills development or job creation.
