numBDLive reports that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is looking to slash costs to fund an aggressive recruitment drive as it continues to lose membership.  

Despite the difficulty of recruiting as employers retrenched, research commissioned by the NUM and its own financial position pointed to stark choices, NUM general secretary David Sipunzi said at the union’s two-day annual central committee meeting this week.  He commented:  "Given the financial situation, we need to look at ways to cut costs without impacting negatively on the organisation.  Dinosaurs failed to acclimatise to changing conditions — where are they now?"  The union is under pressure because of increased rivalry in the sectors in which it organises, as well as job losses, particularly in the mining sector.
