SABC News reports that negotiations to end the nine week industrial action at Glencore's Wonderfontein coal mine in Belfast have deadlocked.
Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) members downed tools demanding better wages and housing allowances, among other things. The protracted strike has affected operations at the mine and mine management remains hopeful that the violent strike will end soon. In a clash with mine security last month, bullets were apparently fired to disperse the striking workers. The workers are demanding a minimum of R8,000 a month. They also want medical aid, transport and housing allowances.
