implatsheadgear smlANA reports that the general secretary of the Workers Association Union (WAU), Elifas Ngoepe, insisted on Tuesday that the union was formed to advance the interests of the workers, not to dilute support for other unions.

“I am not aware of WAU being a bogus union, nor that it was formed with an intention to bring down any other formation.  Ours was based on an ideal to advance the working class interests,” he said.  Ngoepe was responding to newspapers reports that the union was formed with the sole intention of weakening the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) in the platinum mining sector.  Rapport reported it had uncovered evidence of the involvement of Special Operations Unit-linked spies in the formation of WAU, which was established to reduce Amcu's power.
