HeraldLive reports that a Port Elizabeth school was forced to cram 84 pupils into a single classroom on Tuesday as a new wave of teacher shortages hit the northern areas.
The problem is widespread, with countless schools losing school governing body (SGB) teachers as they no longer have money to pay for them. The 84 pupils in one class at Sanctor Primary were previously split between two Grade 4 teachers, but there is no money to pay the one employed by the SGB. This shocking situation could become permanent as the school no longer has money to pay for seven SGB teachers. Acting principal Greg McCullum said: “It is stressful, overwhelming and one feels hopeless.”
