newsThe New Age reports that Pikitup managing director Amanda Nair has gone on special leave after months of pressure from workers.

The City of Johannesburg on Thursday confirmed the latest development that threatened to scupper a deal with the SA Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu).  Samwu regional secretary Meisie Sekaledi said the union was satisfied with Nair stepping aside.  “On the second demand (as put forward by the union), Amanda Nair has requested to be placed on special leave since April 11 until May 3 and management granted the request, so we are happy with that,” said Sekaledi.  The union and the City have since Monday been in wage negotiations regarding a final agreement after ending a five-week strike last weekend.  An agreement in principle was struck on Thursday night.  Meanwhile, Pikitup said it had implemented a double shift as a measure to clear backlogs of refuse removal and illegal dumping caused by the strike.
