TimesLive writes that a labour dispute could be brewing between the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and 14,000 teachers who quit their jobs in order to access their government pensions.
The teachers have returned, but the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) has questioned the department's decision not to rehire them on a permanent basis. The union says the teachers are being kept on short contracts as punishment for quitting. About 30,000 teachers resigned following the announcement of pension structure reforms in 2014. Sadtu general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said the union was discussing how to take the matter forward.
