ShopriteBDLive reports that workers at a distribution centre owned by food retailer Shoprite have downed tools in protest over poor pay and outsourcing.

The Centurion facility contains the continent’s largest distribution centre and serves as the central processing point for about 90% of products delivered to stores in Gauteng and beyond.  The General Industries Workers Union (Giwusa), which is leading the workers as part of the #OutSourcingMustFall movement, said the strike began on Monday with more than 90% of the 1,000 strong workforce joining.  On 17 March, a memorandum was submitted to the management demanding an end to outsourcing and a minimum wage of R10,000.  Management replied seven days later, rejecting any responsibility for the workers.
