New international union federation raises prospects of NUM-Numsa merger

A merger today in Denmark of trade union federations in the mining, energy and manufacturing sector will see the National Union of Mineworkers and the National Union of Metalworkers of SA falling under the same banner internationally. Both unions will put forward candidates for leadership positions in the newly formed federation to be called IndustriALL Global Union. This casts a spotlight on a long-standing Cosatu resolution for its two largest affiliates to merge, although the rivalry between the two is intense.
