Joseph Mathunjwa, president of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, which has gained the reputation of being a radical and disruptive force in the platinum sector, estimated today that the union has 15,000 members at Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg operations. He also claimed a further 5,000 members at Lonmin's Western Platinum Karee mine, where the union has been granted some organisational rights. Furthermore at Anglo American Platinum mines, the union had been 'invited' by workers to canvass membership, he said.
