angloamericanAn underground sit-in by about 169 employees at Anglo American Platinum's (Amplats) Tumela Mine in Amandelbult, Limpopo, continued on Thursday, the company said. The workers were demanding to see managers to discuss their grievances. Spokeswoman Mpumi Sithole reported management was still trying to determine the workers' exact demands and was talking to trade unions to resolve the sit-in. It has encouraged employees to continue using the existing channels to address any labour issue. Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) secretary Jeff Mphahlele indicated that it was not clear whether or not the workers were that union’s members, but that the strike was apparently related to bonuses. Another strike, about retrenchments, is looming at Amplats' Rustenburg operations. The workers' committee, which led a strike in September, said the strike would probably start on Friday.
