reavayaThe New Age reports that commuters in Johannesburg should brace themselves for further transport problems as the Rea Vaya buses will be out of service for yet another month while driver recruitment and training to replace dismissed drivers is under way.

Spokesperson for the operating company, Dumisani Mntambo, said yesterday they were still recruiting new bus drivers and the buses would resume after training.  “At the moment, we are not sure when the services will be back, but we are hoping the buses will resume by the end of March,” he indicated.  The company is training new bus drivers following the dismissal of 158 drivers.  “To promote the safety of commuters, we will train them properly.  Training takes two to three weeks,” Mntambo said.  About 160 drivers who abandoned their buses without explanation were dismissed last week following a disciplinary hearing.  The company retained 65 of its drivers after the dismissals.  The drivers embarked on an illegal strike three weeks ago, abandoning their buses without any explanation, which left commuters stranded.
