Frans Baleni, general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, faces strong opposition in his bid for re-election to his post at the union’s elective conference next month from his deputy, Oupa Komane. Each candidate has the support four of the eleven regions, with the remaining three, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape and Rustenburg, said to be “highly divided”. Baleni claims the campaign to oust him has been bankrolled clandestinely.
