Samwu calls off municipal workers' strike

The South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) has called off its nationwide municipal strike, which started on 15 August 2011, with immediate effect. The decision was taken by its special national executive committee in the interest of the broader public. Wage negotiations with the employer body, the SA Local Government Association (Salga), would continue, but the union will revert to a wage demand of 18% or R2000, which is the greater, after having dropped to 10% during negotiations last week.
