Revolt against the NUM shows cracks in ANC rule

In a long opinion piece, Ed Stoddard and Sherilee Lakmidas write that there is a groundswell revolt against the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) that is tapping into the same popular discontent with poor government delivery of services that is confronting the ANC. Complaints that the NUM officials have become “fat cats” and that the union is not defending the interests of the rank and file have put it under siege, with aggressive upstart unions poaching members in often violent turf wars.
