Wits academics plan protest over low pay

University of the Witwatersrand academics are planning industrial action – accusing their management of reneging on a 10-year agreement to improve salaries. Two staff associations and Nehawu say they will stage a protest this month and on a day next month. An academic at the lowest grade receives an annual minimum of R283,400, while professors receive between R664,000 and R996,500.
