Solidarity’s Reint Dykema says that the events around the Impala Platinum strike have not come out of the blue and that for years things have not been going right at the company. With a majoritarian agency shop agreement with the NUM in place, the only course for newcomer minority unions like the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) to be heard is to ‘break the place down’. Dykema suggests that the present human resources management with its overly legalistic orientation be replaced and that the company should permit other unions to organise and bargain.
