Impala strike is a rebellion by NUM members against their union

The unprotected strike, which has paralysed Impala Platinum’s Rustenburg mining complex and which led to the dismissal of 17,200 workers, represents a rebellion against the National Union of Mineworkers by its members. The NUM has sole representation rights, yet workers are refusing to negotiate through it, while Impala refuses to negotiate with the committee the strikers have appointed to circumvent the union.
