labourcourtsSABC News reports that a potential strike at the South African Post Office (Sapo) was interdicted by the Labour Court in Johannesburg on Friday.

This comes after Sapo applied for an urgent interdict to stop the Communication Workers Union (CWU) from going on strike.  The judge declared the CWU's strike unlawful and unprotected, thereby preventing another disruption to mail delivery services.  The Court set aside a strike certificate the CWU previously received from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).  The interdict stops the strike temporarily until the return date of 24 April when the granting of a final order will be adjudicated on.  CWU deputy general secretary Thabo Mogalane said: “As a union we will reflect on the judgment and per the advice of our legal representatives.  We'll then chart a way forward.”  The latest strike action was to have started on 5 March.  Sapo said in a statement it would continue to address all outstanding labour issues in an amicable manner with the trade union and would take into account affordability and sustainability of its business.
