newsIn an SABC interview, Johann Kotze, CEO of the SA Pork Producers Organisation, said that when the Health Minister advised that all cold meats should be avoided because of the listeria outbreak, consumers perceived that all cold meats were pork and distanced themselves from pork.

According to Kotze, the pork industry has lost R800m since the Minister announced the source of the listeria outbreak on 4 March and 2,000 employees in the industry have lost their jobs.  The organisation also stated that producer Enterprise was responsible for a small percentage of production in the industry, but the announcement caused unnecessary panic about all processed cold cuts and polony.  “With quite a strong brand like Enterprise in South Africa, the moment there is an issue on the brand, people retract themselves from the product and as a result, we experience a massive decrease in volumes selling,” Kotze stated.
