harmonyFree State police have found the bodies of two illegal miners at the Eland shaft of Harmony mine in Welkom and arrested 22 other miners involved in illegal activities at the shaft.

Authorities say the miners used a ventilation shaft to go underground, in search of gold.  The arrests come a week after three illegal miners were found dead at the disused Langlaagte shaft in Gauteng.  Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng indicated that the pair found dead were originally from Lesotho.  Meantime in a statement on Saturday, the SA National Civic Organisation (Sanco) expressed sadness at the deaths of two illegal miners in Welkom and called on authorities to intensify the crackdown on unlawful mining operations.
