amnestyinternationalBDLive reports that an Amnesty International Report has shown that platinum producer Lonmin has failed to meet housing targets set out in the company’s social and labour plan (S&LP).

It has thus fallen foul of one of the core licensing requirements stipulated in the Mineral Resources Development and Petroleum Act.  A call has now been made that the Department of Mineral Resources get a better handle on mining companies’ S&LPs, with a view to strengthening compliance.  The Amnesty report, ‘Smoke and Mirrors: Lonmin’s failure to address housing conditions at Marikana’, details the dismal extent to which Lonmin has fallen short of commitments it made to improve its mineworkers’ living conditions.  The report also found that despite a special presidential package for distressed mining towns being announced by President Jacob Zuma after 2012, little had improved in Marikana and surrounding areas.
