vavi1SowetanLive reports that former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on Wednesday went to ground, refusing to answer questions about the poor performance of the United Front (UF) in the local government elections.

The UF was established by the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) after it dumped the ANC and it used Vavi’s face to campaign in the elections.  The municipalities contested by the UF included the Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) and Buffalo City metros, Senqu in the Eastern Cape and Bitou in the Western Cape.  With NMB and Buffalo City being industrial cities with significant Numsa membership, the UF was expected to garner significant support.  The organisation's affiliates secured only one seat each in NMB and Bitou.  Yet, the UF's Sterkspruit Civic Association (SCA) performed well, emerging as the official opposition in the ANC-led Senqu council, with 23.06% or eight of the 34 seats in council.
