auditorgeneralBDLive reports that Auditor-General Kimi Makwetu said on Wednesday that, despite an increase in the number of municipalities receiving clean audits, local government remained too reliant on the use of consultants.

Institutional capacity and day-to-day financial management remained concerns, Makwetu said at the release of the 2014-15 report into municipal financial management.  "Ninety-two percent of municipalities are now utilising consultants for financial reporting, the cost of which has increased from R267m five years ago, to R892m in 2014-15," Makwetu indicated.  This growth in consulting was often disproportionate to the growth in other services.
