solidariteitTMG Digital reports that according to Solidarity, Lily Mine’s application for business rescue announced by the company on Thursday was the only option left for the mine and its employees.

The trade union’s general secretary, Gideon du Plessis, said given the fact that production had been suspended since a collapse at the mine on 4 February and that the mine probably would not be operational again in the near future‚ business rescue now seemed to be the mine’s best option.  The Mpumalanga mine suspended operations two months ago when a container‚ with three workers inside‚ plunged into a massive sinkhole caused by rock fall.  The three have not yet been found as dangerous conditions have prevented the resumption of rescue operations.  Du Plesis said Solidarity’s main priority now was to protect its members’ jobs.
