amcu thumb medium80 81The New Age reports that talks between with Sibanye Gold and the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) were still at a “sensitive stage”, the gold producer said on Thursday.  

While the miner had in the past said it would refuse to reopen wage talks, it would not elaborate on an “offer” that was tabled with Amcu.  “We’ll see what will come out of the engagement process, we don’t want to pre-empt its outcome,” Sibanye spokesperson James Wellsted said.  This came after the 42% of Sibanye’s workforce affiliated to Amcu, who were poised to down tools on Wednesday, agreed to suspend industrial action after the company sought an urgent court interdict to prevent the union from striking at its Cooke mine.  Last Sunday, Amcu had resolved to down tools in furtherance of a 2015 salary demand of R12,500 a month for its members.
